Burgh Hill Project 2010
The Burgh Hill project is to examine a large enclosure and a smaller enclosure apparent on the hill and located by IHRG following map study and fieldwork in 2007 and 2008. The hill itself has two additional natural features thought very likely to have been of interest to man in Romano-British era and beyond in a natural waterfall and an area whereby several natural springs emerge together. The initial plan is to apply geo phys to selected areas in the interior of the larger of the two enclosures with possible dating test pits dependent on geo phys results. Although this project stands alone and will be conducted in slow time it is believed there is a strategic importance in Burgh Hill itself in its position overlooking the Rother floodplain and in connection with the involvement of Classis-Britannica in the iron industry of this area.
Dudwell Valley Project 2010
An examination of the Dudwell Valley is planned for 2010 and IHRG are advanced in obtaining the necessary access to land through the valley. It is known that there are previously discovered Romano-British iron workings in the valley and that finds of Roman coin have been made, one of which was a hoard of 2000 silvered coins found by a detector user in 2008. The investigation is to centre on the river beds of tributaries feeding the Dudwell in an attempt to locate and record Roman working sites, record the many pits that are present throughout the valley and to locate and examine the trackways with a view to a comparison to the Bardown (Limden Valley) complex as both valleys merge similarly onto the Rother floodplain under Burgh Hill, Etchingham. The project will initially commence with a series of walks through the valley recording features, followed by the exploration of river beds and trackways. The project is to run in tandem with the remaining work at Bardown.
